Before You Buy Chisos

If you’re buying Chisos online, you probably want to know two things before anything else: will they feel good, and will they fit?

Here’s how we build them, how to choose your size and what you can do when a part wears out. Along the way, you’ll hear from verified customers who wear their Chisos daily.

Are Chisos comfortable enough to wear all day?

Yes. We build Chisos for the days when you put your boots on in the morning and keep them on through dinner. The comfort starts with two insoles that do different jobs.

The removable comfort insole has a leather top, cushioning layers and gel at the heel and ball of your foot. Underneath sits a thick structural leather insole that gradually takes an impression of your foot. One cushions your steps. The other forms the foundation of the boot and gets more familiar with each wear.

Outstanding Quality

My first pair of Chisos and I’m obsessed. These boots were comfortable from the first step. I find myself reaching for these in the morning and end up leaving them on until bed time. Literally all day comfortable.

Comfort still starts with fit. Your toes should have room and the boot should hold your foot firmly without hurting. Our fit guide shows you what to check.

Are Chisos worth the money?

A fair amount of what you’re paying for is hidden under your foot. We put money into the leather foundation, the parts that hold the boot’s shape and the work it takes to put them together.

Take the No. 2 we sawed in half. Its leather heel counter supports the back of your heel. A steel shank supports the arch. The welt is stitched to the structural leather insole, which lets a cobbler replace a worn sole while keeping the uppers you’ve already broken in.

If you want a pair to wear regularly and repair as parts wear out, that construction is worth looking at closely.

Most comfortable boot! This was my first time purchasing and decided on the No 6. Compared to my other boot brands, the fit and comfort was far superior. The quality is also very noticeable. I chose Chisos based on online reviews and videos, and I am even more impressed wearing in person. The quality and comfort definitely matches the price, and will be ordering more styles in the future.

What size should I order, and what do D and EE mean?

Start with your usual size in leather footwear. If you regularly wear two sizes, start with the larger one.

For men’s boots, D is the standard width most men wear. EE gives a wide foot more room. EE is available in select styles and colors. Our ladies’ boots use a narrower B width.

If you have a high instep, use an orthotic or struggle to find a comfortable fit, give us a shout before ordering. Tell us which shoes fit you well and where others feel tight. That gives us something useful to work with.

Great boots and even greater customer service

Ordered in a 10 which ended up being too small, so I called and talked to Will. Which was kinda cool cause you don't ever speak to owners. So after discussing I went with the 10.5 which fit like a glove. The fit and finish are comparable to the whites mp I have which is a huge compliment to them. I may have to end up picking up a pair in the magic black. Everything about the purchase was easy and smooth. Definitely recommend them. As for sizing don't worry, they'll help you along the way!

Kyle needed a half size up. You may not. Start with your usual size, then check the fit of the actual boots on your feet.

Do Chisos boots need to break in?

Yes, the leather softens and shapes to your feet with wear. That doesn’t mean the first few days should hurt. The comfort insole cushions from the start while the leather upper and foundation take longer to settle in.

A firm grip over the top of your foot is a good start. Cramped toes or painful pressure are reasons to check the size. Some heel lift is normal in a new cowboy boot, especially while the sole is still stiff.

Highest Quality Meets Comfort

I right out the box one of the best experiences I’ve had in terms of unboxing. The boots came individually wrapped in dust bags made of heavy canvas. And the smell of the leather filled the room. They were comfortable to wear right out of the box, break in time was only 3 days for me

Try both boots on clean carpet with the socks you plan to wear. Walk around and check your instep, toes and heel. If something feels wrong, talk to us before taking them outside. You don’t need to prove your toughness to a pair of boots.

Can Chisos boots be resoled, and how long will they last?

Yes, Chisos boots can be resoled. A worn sole or heel cap doesn’t have to be the end of a pair you love. A good cobbler can replace those parts and keep the uppers that have shaped to your feet.

How long they last depends on where you walk, how often you wear them and how you care for the leather. Check the soles and heel caps occasionally, and have them repaired before wear reaches the structure underneath.

Went with the Chisos #2's but had them resoled with Vibram 730's.

Best decision ever. These have become my every-day pair. My cobbler even made a video about them: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DcorcxUtg-j/

Another 6 months have past. 17 months of several day a week wear. Already longer lasting than many boots I've worn. Others just sometimes fall apart. This heel cap is pretty darn close enough. Soles still not needing for anything. Just an outstanding boot in my opinion. Many really skilled and qualified boot cobblers in these boot groups! I'll be reaching out soon. 👍

Different walking surfaces call for different soles. If you’re considering a rubber resole like PistonMilk’s, ask your cobbler which option suits how you use your boots. See the parts that can be repaired on our build details page.

Can I replace the comfort insole or use my own insert?

Yes. The comfort insole lifts out, so you can air it out or replace it when it wears. The structural leather insole underneath stays in the boot.

You can also try your own insert, but its thickness and shape will change the room inside the boot. Bring it with you for a fitting or tell us about it before ordering. A thicker insert can make an otherwise comfortable boot too tight over the top of your foot.

Excellent Product!

My husband has hard to fit feet and needs orthotic insoles. These boots allow for his custom insoles and fit his foot wonderfully. This is a great product. I'm so glad to be able to support a fellow Texan and their business.

Which Chisos style should I choose?

Choose a shape you’ll want to wear, then make sure it fits your foot. Here’s a quick way to compare the numbered styles:

  • No. 1: a men’s round-toe cowboy boot.
  • No. 2: a men’s cowboy boot with a subtle square toe.
  • No. 3: a shorter ladies’ cowboy boot.
  • No. 4: a taller ladies’ cowboy boot.
  • No. 5: a men’s roughout boot with a snip toe.
  • No. 6: a men’s roper with a lower heel.
  • No. 7: a men’s zipper boot for skinny pants and suits.

I hate square toes but love #2

I have two pairs of #1s and have tried the ropers, but the wider toe justs fits my foot shape better. I hate the look of square toed boots, but this boot is subtle.

Your toes don’t need to reach the end of the boot. What matters is whether they have comfortable room and whether the boot holds the rest of your foot well. If you’re in Austin, come compare styles at Chisos HQ, 3507 South 1st Street.

What if I order the wrong size?

We’ll help you find the right one. You can exchange unused boots within 45 days of purchase, and exchange shipping is free in the lower 48 states. Keep them in like-new condition, with no scratches or scuffs on the soles.

That’s why we suggest the carpet test before heading out. If the size is off, let us know while the boots are still eligible for an exchange.

Most comfortable boots I own

My new boots arrived a week ago. It took less than a day for them to break in. I've pretty much worn nothing else since.

I was reluctant to buy a pair online, but Chisos' reputation for service is well-earned. The first pair were a size 8.5, which were too tight. A size 9 fits perfectly. They made replacement so easy that the only problem was having to wait for UPS twice.

These are my 5th pair of cowboy boots and I can tell already they are going to get more use than the others combined.

Cheers from Arizona,
Brad
