Form, Meet Function
Calf ropers of the early 20th century weren't too satisfied with the tall heels of cowboy-style boots. They wanted something they could run in. And so the roper was born.
With a shorter heel, shorter shaft, and subdued silhouette, the roper is the cowboy boot's quieter cousin. Still built Chisos tough, the flatter footing of the roper is arguably a harder worker.
Personally, we rotate between 'em both.
Your Chisos boots will last decades with appropriate attention. The vamp (leather surrounding the foot) and leather shaft require only minimal care. Condition this leather about once every three months. Store in a cool, dry location and take a day off between heavy uses to allow the insides to properly dry.
The leather soles of your boots are designed to wear out and be replaced, much like the brakes on your pickup truck. Your mileage will vary depending on conditions of use, your weight, and your walking style. Avoid repeated exposure to water and excess moisture. When needed, a cobbler can perform a full resole and heel replacement.
To extend the life of new soles, have a cobbler apply a rubber sole saver upon receipt. No matter what, physics is going to win against leather soles and stitching. To slow the process, a cobbler can add some rubber to mitigate.
First pair i've ever bought. Did some searching on Youtube when searching "best cowboy boots" and these came up a couple times. Watched some more video's and reviews of the boots, and decicded to buy them.
Expensive boots to ship to Europe with the import tax and all, but worth it!
straight out of the box they fit great, and barely need to be worn in at all.
I'm a happy customer from China. just got these no.6 in the mail today, at first glance they looked fantastic, good quality leather inside out, and even though they are double layered, they are just about the same weight as my engineer boots and they look slimmer and slicker than my engineers too, similar toe shape as my horsebutt ROLE CLUB engineers, but of course the cowhide leather on these boots is much softer.
Put them on, they feel OKAY, I got high insteps and these boots are friendly.
Walked my golden retriever dog for about 2 hours (the roughout leather's color pairs well with it and that's why I walked him 2 hours), I could hear some squeaky leather rubbing sound coming out of both of these boots but they weren't sounding too loud and I could take that just fine. the middle part of the boot under my left foot got a bump and it made my foot hurt a little so I took them off and checked inside, it was the insole that had been misplaced, put it right, they felt better.
Now If I had to be the bad guy, if I had to compare apples with bananas, I'm an engineer boots everyday guy, I wouldn't say these cowhide cowboy boots are as "damn comfy" as my John Lofgren's cowhide engineers but hey, I gotta set this straight:
1. I'd love to give these boots their time to break in, because cowhide boots are much easier to break in than horsehide from my past experience, so that opinion is not going to last forever.
2. it's unfair to compare a pair of broken-in boots (and also single layered leather) with a pair of new boots (double layered).
3. they aren't sold on the same price range, and they aren't designed the same at all, so yeah i better shut the f up ;)
The truth is, these boots are great, I love the color, the smell, the leather, the insole design, the look, the gift they sent me, the touch of the thick flannel bags, the great customer service, the fast international shipping, Chisos is the brand for me to remember, because these boots from Austin Texas are my pride and joy.
Size wise, I just followed what the Chisos rep suggested, and they fit perfect.
Here's my sizing references:
keep in mind that personally I got tall insteps and I like wearing my sneakers/shoes/boots not too snug on the toe box.
I'm a Brannock size 10D with socks on.
Nike Air Jordan 1 size US11. I tried US10.5 before and my big toe will touch the very front part of the shoe when walking.
Converse Chuck Taylor 70s size US10.5, about the same fit as AJ1 size 11.
Red Wing 875/8875 size US10D/9.5E, (9.5E is the best fit, 9.5D fits tight on the sides of my foot but after some breaking in, they are okay. 10D is a bit longer but fit fine).
Role Club horse Engineer size unknown for it's custom made, in these the my right foot fits perfect (and when I say perfect, it means more than perfect), however, the left one hurts my instep a little and I can only wear them before 6pm, and if I keep wearing them after 6pm, my instep will hurt a lot, my feet just got bigger after 6pm in these boots for no reason, believe it or not.
John Lofgren cowhide Engineer 10D, they feel roomy overall without insoles, but very comfortable with insoles added or thick winter socks, to me these boots feel like a pair of leather socks, they're just perfect (and again when I say perfect, it means more than perfect). I could go size 9.5 on these but I prefer it a little roomier, more winter friendly.
Attractions lot.444 bilt buck Engineer size 10.5D, they're quite roomy overall, good with thick socks only. if it's with insoles added paired with normal socks, then they feel tight on the top part of my feet, insteps are fine though. I think I could easily go 10D on these with normal socks, then they might be a perfect fit, but if I had to pair them with thick socks then I'm not quite sure.
Chisos no.6 size US10.5, they fit perfect with the original insoles, the toes got plenty of room, but the sides and the top part of the boots hug my feet just like gloves, the heel slip issue is better than all of my engineers, good job here,
nuff said.
The boots arrived well packaged. They look nice and well made. The fit was true to my regular size footwear. Fit was snug comfortable. Almost perfect. It was hard getting my foot into them and harder getting out. I changed socks and after a half dozen wears the boots are loosening up. A good quality boot. I won't comment on the cost as I don't have knowledge about cost of manufacturing
From first day they fit good and comfortable. Size same a dress shoe. I love them. Maybe another pair in my future. Thanks Chisos.
Absolutely an outstanding pair of boots The Chisos Ropers are superb…. Could not be happier with my choice..
One word "craftmanship". The shaft may seem a little bit tight. So the first time I put on the boots I took out the innersole. After all is ok, it fits true size. This is very important when ordering shoes/boots online. Removing the boots from the box you get a pleasant aroma from the tanned leather. There is no doubt that you receive all the value you pay for with this item.
My Ropers are extremely comfortable right from the beginning. The dark brown color goes with everything and very happy with these boots. Also, the cool experience at the Chisos Boots store added to the fun. Highly recommend these boots and Chisos.
I have been wearing cowboy for as long as I can remember and 61 years old so over the years I have had them all . This is a very well made boot and extremely comfortable . I wear these boots everyday wether for work or the weekends and I have notice when I get home I still have them on were in the past I would be kicking my boots off as I walked in the door . Well done Chisos
When it comes to buying anything, I will spend hours upon hours doing my research and making sure the product I buy is the absolute best - for the money. I will say that you get what you pay for with Chisos, and I mean that in the best way possible. I ordered the Chisos #6 and the quality and comfort is second to none. I was a little hesitant to drop so much cash for a pair of boots, but when I received them, I was immediately pleased and had absolutely NO buyers remorse.
When it came to size, I didn't exactly make the best decision and had to return the first order. Chisos customer service is incredible and they made the return process extremely easy.
I wear a size 11 in Nike tennis shoes, so I ordered a half size down - but that was wrong in my case. I emailed Chisos and explained the situation. I told them that I also wear an 11 in Ariat's Benchmade Roper. The Chisos rep suggested that I choose an 11 1/2 instead.
I completed the exchange and received my larger boots in less than a week. They fit PERFECTLY! Hopefully, that will help in some way for those concerned about size.
Just buy the boots. Don't worry about getting the size wrong - Chisos will help you figure it out and they will take care of you. The boots are incredible and look amazing. It's only been a few days for me, but I get compliments on them every single day.
Great company...and I look forward to doing business with them again soon.
I am not a cowboy, but if I was I would sleep in these boots. Like I have already. Hahaha! Buy up a size, and say thank you. For the best boots in the world.
